How to Let Visitors Apply a Ticket to an Altru Membership Online

October 31, 2026

A family of four buys general admission online, has a great morning, and on the drive home starts wondering whether a membership would have been the smarter buy. At the front desk, staff can usually make that math work for them on the spot. Online, the same family often finds a membership form that charges full price and has no idea they already paid for admission today.

Crediting a ticket purchase toward a membership is one of the best conversion moments an attraction has. The visitor already likes you, already gave you money, and already sees the price gap. The hard part is offering it on the website, not just at the desk.

What Altru handles well, and where the gap is

In person, this credit is usually handled by staff. Depending on your setup and policies, that might be a discount, a price adjustment, or a refund-and-resell at daily sales during the same visit. That works because a person is there to look up the original sale and decide whether it qualifies.

The online side is less clear. We aren’t aware of a standard Altru web form setting that looks up a visitor’s earlier ticket order and automatically applies its value to a new membership. Configurations and releases vary, so before you build a workaround, confirm it: ask Blackbaud support directly, and test anything they suggest in a sandbox or with a staff test account before you put it on your site.

If the answer is no, you still have reasonable options. They all come down to two questions: how do you prove the visitor actually bought a ticket, and how do you get the discount onto the membership transaction?

Three workable approaches

1. A time-limited discount code sent after the visit

This is the simplest and the one most sites can run today. Create a membership discount equal to (or close to) the value of a typical admission, and send it only to people who bought tickets. Because only ticket buyers receive the code, the email itself is the proof of purchase.

  • Pull recent ticket buyers with an Altru query filtered by sale date (test that it captures online orders the way you expect).
  • Send the code in a post-visit email within a day or two, while the visit is fresh.
  • Give it a short expiration, often 7 to 14 days, so it stays tied to the visit.

The tradeoff: a flat discount won’t match every order exactly. A single adult and a family of five get the same credit unless you create tiers. You can accept that for simplicity and add a “call us if your visit cost more” line for the edge cases.

2. Different credit amounts by membership level

If your levels are tied to household size, you can match the credit to the level instead of to the ticket. A dual-level membership gets credit for two admissions, a family level for four. Visitors pick the level that fits their group, and the credit roughly matches what they likely spent. Check how your membership web form handles discounts per level before you promise this publicly.

3. A staff-reviewed request form

For exact credits, have visitors submit their order number and email through a simple form. Staff look up the sale in Altru, process the membership at the correct price, and email confirmation. It’s accurate, but it isn’t instant, and it adds work during your busiest months. It’s a good fallback for the cases the discount code doesn’t cover.

Rules to settle before you launch

Whichever route you choose, write down the policy so the website, the desk, and the call center say the same thing:

  • Window: how many days after the visit the credit is valid.
  • What counts: general admission only, or also special exhibitions, programs, and group tickets?
  • Who qualifies: the purchaser only, or anyone in the party?
  • Start date: does the membership start on the visit date or the join date? Members notice this.
  • One credit per order: so a single receipt can’t discount several memberships.

Keep the reporting clean

Finance will want to know how much revenue these conversions bring in and how much admission revenue was credited. Use a dedicated discount or source code for ticket conversions, separate from your general membership promotions. That gives you a single query for “memberships sold from a ticket credit,” and makes it easy to compare renewal rates for these members against everyone else next year.

Also check the constituent side. A visitor who bought tickets as a guest and then joins online can end up as a second record. Review new members created from conversion codes for duplicates in the first few weeks.

Where Social Good fits

None of the approaches above requires extra software. Where we help is after the visitor joins: Membership Portal lets new members check their status, renew, upgrade, and update their profile online against live Altru data, so a member who joined from a ticket credit can manage the membership themselves instead of calling the desk.

Quick answers

Can visitors apply a ticket to a membership on an Altru web form automatically?
We aren’t aware of a built-in way to do this. Confirm with Blackbaud support for your setup; otherwise, a discount code sent to ticket buyers is the most common workaround.

How long should the credit window be?
Short enough that it’s clearly tied to the visit. One to two weeks is common, though some sites allow up to 30 days.

Should the desk and website offer the same deal?
Yes. If the desk credits the full ticket price and the website gives a smaller flat discount, explain the difference on the page, or visitors will call to ask.
