How to Fix Altru Login Issues, Including Safari Sign-In Loops

July 31, 2026

Altru login trouble almost always falls into one of a few causes: the browser, the account, a saved link, or Blackbaud’s side of the connection. Very few of them mean something is wrong with your Altru database. The fastest fix comes from working out which one you have before you start clearing everything and resetting passwords.

Below is the order we’d check things in, starting with the quick tests that rule out the most.

First, narrow it down in two minutes

Ask three questions before changing any settings:

  • Is it one person or everyone? If nobody on staff can get in, check Blackbaud’s public status page and your own internet connection before touching anyone’s browser. A widespread problem is rarely fixed at the desk.
  • Does it work in a private or incognito window? If a private window logs in fine, the account is fine and the problem is stored data in the regular browser (cookies, cached pages, or an extension).
  • Does it work in a different browser? If Chrome or Edge works and Safari doesn’t, you’re looking at a Safari setting, not a password.

Those three answers usually point you straight to one of the sections below.

Browser problems (the most common cause)

Altru signs you in through Blackbaud’s shared login (your Blackbaud ID) and then hands you off to your organization’s Altru site. That handoff depends on cookies and redirects working across more than one web address. Anything that blocks or garbles those cookies can produce a login loop, a blank page, or a sign-in that seems to succeed and then drops you back at the start.

Try these in order:

  1. Clear cookies and cached data for Blackbaud sites, then close the browser completely and reopen it. Clearing only the cache often isn’t enough; the stale login cookie is usually the culprit.
  2. Turn off extensions, especially ad blockers, privacy tools, password managers that auto-fill the wrong account, and script blockers. Test with them off, then turn them back on one at a time.
  3. Allow pop-ups for your Altru site. If part of the sign-in or a report tries to open a new window and the browser blocks it, it can look like a page that won’t load. Allowing pop-ups for your Altru address rules that out.
  4. Update the browser. Older versions sometimes fail on current sign-in pages.

Safari specifically

Safari is stricter about cross-site cookies than most browsers, and that strictness is what tends to break the Blackbaud-to-Altru handoff. Typical symptoms are a login page that reloads endlessly or a successful sign-in followed by an error or empty screen.

Things to check on a Mac:

  • Cross-site tracking prevention. In Safari’s privacy settings, temporarily turning off the option that prevents cross-site tracking is the most common fix. If that solves it, you’ve confirmed the cause; decide with your IT person whether to leave it off or use another browser for Altru.
  • Website data for Blackbaud. Safari lets you remove stored data for individual sites. Remove anything related to Blackbaud, quit Safari fully, and try again.
  • Content blockers and private relay. Content blocker extensions and network privacy features can interfere with sign-in redirects. Test with them disabled.
  • Supported browsers. Blackbaud publishes a list of supported browsers for Altru, and it changes over time. Check the current list before spending an afternoon on Safari. If Safari isn’t fully supported for the parts of Altru you use, the practical answer is to keep a supported browser installed just for Altru.

On iPads used at the front desk, the same Safari settings live in the device’s Settings app rather than inside the browser. Shared iPads are worth checking first, since someone may have changed a privacy setting without telling anyone.

Account problems

If the issue follows the person to any browser or computer, look at the account itself:

  • Wrong email. Staff who have more than one Blackbaud ID (a personal one and a work one, or an old address from a previous job) often sign in with the one that isn’t linked to your Altru site.
  • Password reset or multi-factor authentication. A changed phone, a new authenticator app, or a reset that never finished will block sign-in. The person may need to complete setup again.
  • User access in Altru. Signing in to Blackbaud is separate from having access to your Altru database. If the login works but Altru says the user isn’t authorized, an administrator at your organization needs to confirm that person is set up as an Altru user with the right role. New hires and returning seasonal staff hit this most.

Saved links and bookmarks

Old bookmarks are a quiet source of trouble. A bookmark saved from the middle of a session, or from an older address, can send people to a page that no longer exists or that expects an existing login. Have staff bookmark your organization’s main Altru address fresh, not a deep link copied from the address bar.

When to call Blackbaud support

If a clean browser, a private window, and a second browser all fail for one user, and their Altru user access looks correct, it’s time to open a case with Blackbaud. Include what you’ve already ruled out, which browsers and versions you tested, the exact error text, and the time it happened. That saves a round of “have you tried clearing your cache” and gets you to someone who can look at the account.

Keeping it from coming back

  • Pick one supported browser for Altru work and set it up the same way on every shared computer and tablet.
  • Keep a short note at each station with the Altru address and who to ask for user access.
  • Add Altru user setup to your onboarding checklist for new and seasonal staff, so first-day login problems get handled the week before.

Quick answers

Why does Altru work in Chrome but not Safari?
Usually Safari’s cross-site tracking protection or stored site data is blocking the sign-in handoff. Clear Blackbaud site data and test with cross-site tracking prevention turned off.

I can log in to Blackbaud but not Altru. Why?
Your Blackbaud ID works, but it may not be linked to your organization’s Altru site, or your user access hasn’t been set up. Ask your Altru administrator to check.
